What is Positive Reinforcement Training and Why is it Awesome?
First of all, it works! It works with dogs of all ages, all breeds, all backgrounds, and all temperaments. Whether you’ve just adopted a new pup, you’re navigating the challenges of adolescence or you’re dealing with serious behavioral issues, we can tackle the situation using proven, evidence-based, force-free methods.
When I started walking dogs back in 2004, most popular training programs focussed on establishing “dominance” over dogs. Phrases like “showing them who’s boss” and “putting them in their place” were very popular. The thing is, we control access to every single thing our dogs want or need in order to survive. Food, water, access to the outdoors, access to the indoors, walks, play time, belly rubs, you name it. We choose if and when our dogs have access to those things. If that doesn’t make us the leaders of our little packs, I don’t know what would!
What our pups need to learn is what works! All day, every day, our dogs are sorting out which behaviors are most likely to get them what they want. Sometimes, humans send mixed signals which can confuse dogs and wind up reinforcing the exact behaviors we wish would go away. Sometimes, our efforts to discourage “bad” behavior increase stress, frustration and fear and bring about larger issues, which can damage our relationships with our pets.
Positive reinforcement training isn’t just about getting your dog to do what you want them to do when you want them to do it, it’s about building a language and learning to communicate with one another. You’ll not only be training your dog, you’ll be strengthening your relationship with them and earning their trust as a calm and competent leader.
