Dogs do what works.
Every minute of every day, your dog is sorting out which behaviors are most likely to get them what they want.
Are you catching your dog being “good” and rewarding that behavior, or waiting for them to get up to shenanigans and then trying to stop or redirect them?
If stealing your favorite shoes is more likely to start a fun game of chase than grabbing one of their own toys, they’re gonna keep on going for the shoes, because it works!
In my early days as a trainer, we spent a lot of time talking about being in charge. Showing dogs “who’s the boss”, and “putting them in their place.
The thing is, we control access to every single thing our dogs want or need in order to survive. Food, water, access to the outdoors, access to the indoors, walks, play time, belly rubs, greeting other dogs and humans, you name it. If that’s not enough to make you the boss, I don’t know what is!
We choose when and if our dogs have access to those things, and in exchange for which behaviors. You get to choose what works.
Training is also about you and your dog learning to communicate with one another. Setting clear boundaries and expectation, strengthening your bond and earning their trust as a trustworthy leader.
